How Dietary Supplements Are Regulated in Brazil: What Changed in 2026
Finding a product in Anvisa's database can help verify its regulatory status. It does not prove every label claim or show that the supplement is necessary for everyone.
What changed in September 2026
On 1 September, Brazil's transition period ended for dietary supplements and weight-control foods previously communicated to local health authorities to be notified to Anvisa. Notification became a mandatory part of the regulatory pathway for products covered by the new rules.
Why a product may not appear in the database
Absence from the search tool does not automatically make every product on sale illegal. Products properly communicated by 31 August 2024 and manufactured by 1 September 2026 may remain on sale until expiry. Manufacturing date, batch, shelf life and traceability all matter.
Notification is not proof of effectiveness
Regulatory compliance addresses identity, composition, quality, safety, labelling and manufacturer responsibility within the relevant category. It does not turn broad claims about weight loss, muscle gain, immunity, detox or longevity into proven clinical benefits.
How to check a product
Search the product or its identifying information in Anvisa's food database and confirm the manufacturer, category and status. Compare the result with the label, batch and seller. Be cautious with therapeutic claims, guaranteed outcomes, unclear formulations and products available only through informal profiles.
What a Brazilian supplement recall means
On 9 September 2026, Anvisa ordered the recall and suspension of Expert Berlian, Expert Diamond and Expert Dimond, together with named Nutra Senior and Nutra Whey lines. Their notifications had been cancelled, required stability studies had not been supplied and some items remained available online. The measure applies to the products named in the official action: it does not establish that every supplement in the same category is unsafe, but the listed products must not be sold, promoted or used.
Supplements cannot claim to treat disease
Expert Berlian was promoted with claims involving cartilage regeneration, anti-inflammatory action and treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and other conditions. Advertising, testimonials and online listings do not validate therapeutic claims. Regulatory compliance and clinical effectiveness are separate questions, and supplements do not replace diagnosis or treatment.
Quality and need are separate questions
A compliant supplement may still be unnecessary, incorrectly dosed for the intended goal or unsuitable alongside medicines and health conditions. Use should be considered in the context of diet, laboratory results, symptoms, dose, duration and individual risk.
Who needs additional caution
Pregnant people, children, adolescents, older adults, drug-tested athletes and people with kidney or liver disease or regular medicines need particular care. Adverse effects and suspected irregularities should be reported through official channels and discussed with the health-care team.
Personalized care
A plan should fit the person, not the trend.
