Physical activity and adolescence

Is There a Best Type of Exercise for Adolescents With Obesity?

The question sounds simple, but the answer must consider health, enjoyment, access, safety and continuity, not only the scale.

What the review found

A Cochrane review included 30 studies and 1,508 adolescents. Physical activity produced modest changes in weight, waist circumference and body fat, while certainty was low or very low for several outcomes.

There is no universal winner

The evidence cannot establish one superior mode for everyone. Preference, skill, environment, family support and the ability to repeat an activity influence outcomes.

Benefits beyond weight

Regular activity can support fitness, strength, sleep, wellbeing and social participation. Reducing care to weight loss may increase stigma and discourage movement.

Integrated care

Food, movement, sleep, mental health and family support should work together. Obesity and associated conditions may require a multidisciplinary assessment to set safe priorities.

Medicines are not aesthetic shortcuts

Some incretin medicines have specific paediatric indications in Brazil, but this does not authorise use for rapid weight loss, competitions or appearance standards. In August 2026, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics reinforced the need for diagnosis, individual assessment and specialist follow-up, with attention to gastrointestinal symptoms, hydration, growth, lean mass, mental health and product provenance.

Personalized care

A plan should fit the person, not the trend.
